Spiral Style Hat
This fool-the-eye hat design requires no cabling to form colorful spirals that stand out against their striped background – and you use only one color at a time! Knitting from the top down allows you to alter the length of the hat for your desired slouch while completing your spirals neatly at their tip. Top off your hat with a two-color pom- pom and show off your spiral style! Spiral Style Mittens (shown in last photo) coordinate perfectly with this hat.
This pattern is geared to intermediate knitters who can knit a small amount of stitches in the round on double point needles to start the hat at the top. Slip stitches are used to form the color design. The main pattern pdf is two pages long and includes a charted form of the design. For those who prefer the chart design to be written out there is a second pdf included. This pattern has been professionally tech edited and fully test knit to be clear and free of errors.
Sizes: XS (S/M, M/L), to fit child (small to medium adult, medium to large adult) with head circumferences of 19 (21, 23) in/ 48.5 (53.5, 58.5) cm. Shown in size S/M.
Finished Measurements: Circumference: 17 (19, 21) in/ 43 (48.5, 53.5) cm. Designed to fit with approximately 2 in/ 5 cm of negative ease.
Height: 8 (9, 10) in/ 20.5 (23, 25.5) cm, can be adjusted easily.
Gauge: 21 sts and 37 rnds/4 in/10 cm over slip stitch pattern in the rnd. (Choose a yarn and needles that give you approximately 20 sts and 28 rnds/4 in on a stockinette swatch.)
What You Need:
✦ Worsted weight yarn in two colors: (note that yardages do not include pom- pom).
- MC (forms the spirals): 1 (1.3, 1.6) oz/ 30 (37, 46) g, approximately 66 (82, 100) yards/ 61 (76, 92) meters. Sample shown in Knit Picks Wool of the Andes, 100% wool, 110 yd/50g, color “Pumpkin”.
- CC: 0.9 (1.1, 1.3) oz/ 25 (31, 38) g, approximately 55 (69, 84) yards/ 51 (63, 77) meters. Sample shown in Knit Picks Wool of the Andes, 100% wool, 110 yd/50g, color “Artic Pool Heather”.
✦ One set of dpns and one 16 in/ 40cm circular needle in size required to obtain gauge. I used US #5/ 3.75 mm. You may need a size or two above or below that.
✦ One 16 in/ 40 cm circular needle one US size smaller than needle used for gauge. I used a US #4/ 3.5 mm.
✦ One stitch marker.
✦ Optional:8 (9,10) additional markers for dividing pattern sections.
✦ Tapestry needle for weaving in ends.
